Tioman Island Information

Best time to visit

Monsoon usually lasts from the end of November till the beginning of February and can bring some impressive rain showers and big waves. It is also possible to surf during this time. The dry season usually starts beginning of March till the end of October.

Getting around

Getting around is done mostly by walking, trekking, 4×4 taxi or by sea taxi. It is also possible to rent bicycles and scooters in Tekek, if you plan on renting a scooter, please drive safely.

Taxi’s

When you arrive on the island, you will no doubt be offered a taxi service as soon as you alight the ferry. Before you take the taxi, please confirm the price with the driver to avoid being over charged. a Taxi to Swiss Cottage from the jetty will cost just RM15 for the car, not per person. If you are alone you will have to pay the full price. Once you arrive at Swiss Cottage and you would like to order a taxi, we can arrange this for you at the reception.

Money

The Local currency is RM (Ringgit Malaysia) and sen (cents). Swiss Cottage does not take credit cards, but there is an automatic teller machine at the BSN Bank just opposite the Airport. However please bring some Ringgit with you as there is only one ATM on the island and it does go out of order from time to time.

Internet and WIFI

We have a WIFI service available in the reception, however due to slow internet speeds that are beyond our control, it can be very frustrating if you are used to fast fiber optic internet. We recommend that you purchase a simcard for your smart device when you arrive in Malaysia, 3G (and in cities 4G) is widely available. We recommend using either Maxis or Celcom the other networks do not have good coverage outside of the cities.

First-Aid

It is recommended to bring a first-aid kit containing mosquito repellent, antiseptic cream, plasters, Paracetamol, anti-histamine tablets (useful if you get bitten by mosquitos) and of course Sun lotion. Advisable shots are Tetanus and Hepatitis A+B. There is a clinic on the island equipped for minor injuries. It is not necessary to take malaria tablets or vaccination for yellow fever, but if you are in doubt, please consult your doctor.

Sun lotion

Recent studies have shown that sun lotion containing Oxybenzone seriously damages and harms coral reefs. There are sunscreens available that do not contain harmful chemicals, please try to source these to minimise your impact on the reefs. If you plan on going snorkeling or diving wear a wide brim hat and protective clothing to avoid sun burn. Chec k out the links below for more information.
